The term "Ayurveda" is derived from the Sanskrit words "ayur" (life) and "veda" (science or knowledge), thus it is often referred to as the "science of life." This holistic approach to health is designed to help individuals achieve and maintain balance both within their bodies and with the world around them. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, the universe is made up of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements combine to form three life forces or energies, called "doshas": Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth). Ayurveda emphasizes the prevention of disease, rejuvenation of our body systems, and the extension of life span. It's not merely a medicinal system; it's a way of life that aims to bring about the perfect balance of the entire personality – body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda includes diet and herbal remedies and emphasizes the use of body, mind, and spirit in disease prevention and treatment. In Ayurveda, treatment is tailored to the individual's constitution, considering their unique balance of doshas. It combines a wide range of techniques and practices such as dietary changes, herbal supplements, yoga, meditation, and massage therapy, aiming to cleanse the body, boost defense against disease, and keep the mind, body, and spirit in harmony.
